Our Story

Who we are and why we are here.

MAPS was formed in 2011 as an ex-services charity run by those who themselves served their community during the time commonly known as ‘The Troubles’ under Operation Banner. We have the vital experience, skills and empathy needed to look after the welfare, support and sign-posting needs of former colleagues.

[Note: Signposting means we help our members to receive the service that best meets their needs and/or contact the agency or organization which is best qualified to deal with their issue.]

Our Response

Our response is to reach out to a population who have felt forgotten, alienated and neglected since the end of their service. Operating in one of the most socially deprived areas of Northern Ireland, we acknowledge that the basic welfare needs of those who served has been lacking for many years.

Our Dedication

We acknowledge that there is a real need for a group to work confidentially on behalf of ex-security forces. We dedicate ourselves to identifying and communicating with those who served and encouraging them to join with us to avail of the support and benefits they are entitled to.

Our Area

We cover from the Clogher Valley to Magheramason. With such a large territory we anticipate having local ‘surgeries’ in your own area.

Comments from people we have reached out to

MAPS is a lifeline for former members of the security forces. It gives a voice to people who have been left marginalized and forgotten. We now have a Group represented by people who went through the same thing.

I have had the best year of my life since I retired from work. We are very grateful for the help and support that we have received and we will be telling others about this help and about West Tyrone MAPS.
